Montpellier had 310,240 inhabitants in 2023 according to Insee, 22.4% of them aged 15 to 24: an audience that the city's shops and restaurants reach first on TikTok and Instagram. From our Paris offices, we travel down to shoot social ads, UGC content and Reels for Montpellier brands. We already know the city: it is where we launched the Instagram and TikTok accounts of Top Grands Buffets, with 50,000 views per video.

Insee's figures describe a city that grows through the arrival of new residents. Montpellier went from 285,121 inhabitants in 2017 to 310,240 in 2023, with a density of 5,454 inhabitants per km². Of the 1.4% average annual growth between 2017 and 2023, 0.8 points come from net migration. For a brand, this means that every September brings people who don't yet have a hairdresser, a gym or a lunchtime canteen. They search on TikTok and Instagram. The share of managers among those aged 15 or over also rose to 15.1% in 2023, from 12.4% in 2017. A single local campaign on Instagram can therefore speak to two distinct audiences, students and young professionals, with two series of videos shot on the same day. The Métropole, for its part, had 516,657 inhabitants in 2022.
Health, digital and creative industries
The Métropole structures its development around five sectors: health, digital, cultural and creative industries, renewable energy and agri-food. The city also points out that it is home to the oldest medical university in the world, which explains the weight of laboratories, hospitals and medtech start-ups. These organisations recruit continuously for rare profiles: nurses, researchers, developers. An employer brand video shot in a laboratory or an open-plan office, with an employee talking to camera about their day, works better on LinkedIn and Instagram than a brochure. For a medtech or a digital start-up, we also shoot short B2B formats: a 30-second product demo, a founder interview, subtitles designed for viewing without sound at a trade show or in a LinkedIn Ads campaign.
From rue de la Loge to the Halles Castellane
According to the City of Montpellier, the city centre has 2,000 shopkeepers and craftspeople, 360 fashion boutiques and 150 food shops, including 2 covered markets and 3 farmers' markets. The Écusson continues to attract retail brands: the Métropole cites the arrival of Decathlon City, Søstrene Grene, Atelier Tuffery and the restaurant MUSE, as part of a strategy run with the CCI Hérault. Each opening of this kind deserves a launch video and a UGC series: a fitting-room try-on, a first visit filmed by a creator, a spontaneous review on the way out. On the food side, the Halles Castellane offer a covered-market setting where a cheesemonger or a caterer films well in close-up. The terraces of place de la Comédie and the pedestrian streets of the Écusson serve as the backdrop for restaurant Reels, especially at the end of the day, when the light skims the pale facades.
Comédie, Peyrou, Antigone and the festival calendar
Montpellier offers very different settings a few tram stops apart. Place de la Comédie and its opera house for lively scenes, the Peyrou promenade with its triumphal arch and water tower for wide shots, Ricardo Bofill's Antigone district for a crisp architectural look, Port Marianne and the banks of the Lez for a contemporary feel, with Jean Nouvel's Hôtel de Ville and the Arbre Blanc. The calendar matters as much as the location. From May to July, the City highlights four major festivals: the Comédie du Livre, the Printemps des Comédiens, Montpellier Danse and the Festival Radio France. These weeks suit brands that want crowds in the frame; for an empty street or a shot without passers-by, a weekday morning out of season is better.
Top Grands Buffets, then a typical day in Montpellier
Top Grands Buffets, an established address in Montpellier, wanted to officially launch its presence on Instagram and TikTok to reach a local clientele that didn't know it. We built a line of food content around the generosity and variety of the buffet. The result: 50,000 views per video, 97,000 for the best one, and +30% revenue growth. For a new project, we take the train to Gare Saint-Roch, a few minutes' walk from the Comédie. Beforehand, we approve the script, the creators and the shoot plan, then the permits if we're using public space. On site, a single day lets us film the exteriors in the morning before the heat, the lunch service in the kitchen and dining room, then UGC testimonials in the afternoon, with several hooks per video to test the ads.

An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
