Monaco employs far more people than it houses residents: IMSEE counted 77,866 jobs at the end of 2025 for 38,367 residents recorded on 31 December 2023. Every morning, tens of thousands of employees cross the border, and every brand is aiming at residents, cross-border workers and visitors all at once. From Paris, Esekai travels to the Principality to film creative ads, UGC videos and TikToks, with formats designed for audiences who neither speak the same language nor share the same codes.
See our workNearly 150 nationalities between the Rocher and Fontvieille
The 2023 census published by IMSEE in November 2024 marks a turning point: for the first time, Monegasques are the largest community, with 9,179 residents, or 23.9% of the population, ahead of the French (8,473) and the Italians (7,515). The total population is up 2.8% on 2016 and the Principality is home to nearly 150 nationalities according to Monaco Tribune, which reports these figures. For a brand, this diversity changes the way a video is written. An Instagram ad that relies on a French pun loses part of its audience. A visual story is better, understandable without sound, with subtitles in French, English and sometimes Italian. UGC casting follows the same logic: an English-speaking creator who lives in the Principality will convince a different audience from a creator from Nice, and both have a place in the same campaign.
A labour market geared to cross-border workers
According to IMSEE's 2025 employment observatory, relayed by Monaco Tribune in May 2026, the private sector has 59,724 employees, of whom only 1,011 are Monegasque nationals. The French account for 61.6%, the Italians 15% and the Portuguese 6.8%. Nine private-sector employees in ten live outside Monaco, and more than 16,000 live in Nice. Companies employ fewer than ten people on average and 88% of the market is geared to services. These figures point to a specific employer-brand need: an asset manager, a hotel or a firm has to attract candidates who live in Menton, Beausoleil, Nice or Italy. A recruitment video shot in the offices, with an employee describing their commute and their day, distributed on LinkedIn and Instagram in the Alpes-Maritimes, speaks directly to that talent pool.
Boutiques, restaurants and hotels under visitors' eyes
Monaco's retail serves three audiences who cross paths in the same streets: residents, employees who have lunch locally and visitors, who come for the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the Musée océanographique or the changing of the guard in front of the Palais princier. Each reacts to different content. A restaurant in La Condamine reaches employees with a TikTok showing how fast the lunchtime service is, while a Reel shot at sunset on a terrace facing the harbour targets visitors planning their evening. For a fashion or jewellery boutique, UGC takes a more restrained form: a customer trying things on, commenting and comparing, in an elegant setting but without overacting. Hotels are better off showing what photos don't convey, such as the view from the room on waking or the walk to Larvotto.
Port Hercule, the Rocher and the calendar of major events
The Principality can be filmed in a handful of very different areas: the Rocher and its lanes around the Palace, Port Hercule and its quays, the Carré d'Or near the Casino, Larvotto beach and the more recent Fontvieille district. The calendar matters as much as the location. The Formula 1 race, in spring, turns the city into a circuit and makes access complicated, but yields images everyone recognises. The Monaco Yacht Show, in September at Port Hercule, draws an international clientele that appeals to high-end brands. The Fête nationale on 19 November and the Festival international du cirque de Monte-Carlo, early in the year, offer other content opportunities. Outside those weeks, winter and early spring remain the times when we can shoot most freely, with soft light and quieter streets.
Shooting in the Principality, in practice
The Esekai team reaches the Côte d'Azur via Nice airport or by train, then gets to Monaco on the line that runs along the coast. On site, distances are short and most things are done on foot, with compact equipment that slips easily into a hotel lobby or a boutique. A professional shoot in public space may require a permit: we check the procedures in advance and always plan indoor alternatives. The brief is approved remotely, with the shot list, the people filmed, the subtitle languages and the UGC creators to cast. One day generally covers one venue and several formats: a Meta ad, two or three TikToks and stories, delivered with several hooks to test.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
