At the tip of the Cotentin, the 1933 transatlantic ferry terminal now houses a nuclear submarine that you can tour from bow to stern. Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, created in 2016 by the merger of five communes, has 78,258 inhabitants in 2023 according to Insee. It is a town of port, arsenal and town-centre shops, where the sea serves as the backdrop for almost everything. Esekai sets out from Paris to film creative ads, UGC videos and TikToks there, as close as possible to the quays and the businesses that keep them alive.
See our workFive communes united in a single town
Since 1 January 2016, Cherbourg-Octeville, Équeurdreville-Hainneville, La Glacerie, Querqueville and Tourlaville have formed a new commune, as reported by the Banque des Territoires when elected officials took the decision at the end of 2015. The five former communes became delegated communes. This history matters for a brand: a resident of Tourlaville or Querqueville still often identifies with their neighbourhood before calling themselves a Cherbourgeois. A local ad does better naming these places than talking about “the town” in general. Across this area, Insee counts 78,258 inhabitants in 2023, against 92,045 in 1990, and 41,700 jobs in the commune. A Meta or TikTok campaign should therefore be set to a tight radius around the port, bearing in mind that the town has been losing residents for three decades: the content has to speak to loyal residents as much as to newcomers.
Arsenal, submarines and maritime trades
It is in Cherbourg that Naval Group builds the French Navy's submarines, and around the shipyard lives a whole network of subcontractors, engineering offices and maintenance firms. Insee counts 329 active industrial establishments in the commune in 2024: 7% of the total, alongside a majority of service activities. These companies are constantly looking for welders, boilermakers, electricians and engineers, often in competition with one another. Recruitment video has an obvious place here, provided you respect the zones that security allows to be filmed: a portrait of an apprentice shot in the workshop, a technician's testimonial on the quayside, a short format that shows the tool rather than the logo. For a boilermaking or maintenance SME, a forty-five-second LinkedIn film makes visible a know-how that customers never see.
Le Redoutable, the Titanic and 4 million visitors
The Cité de la Mer opened on 29 April 2002 in the former transatlantic ferry terminal, inaugurated in 1933. According to the Choose Normandy site, it has already received more than 4 million visitors and in 2022, with its submarine Le Redoutable, won the TV programme “Le Monument préféré des Français” (the French people's favourite monument). The venue also recalls that the Titanic made its last call at Cherbourg in 1912. These visitors then pass through the harbour restaurants and the town-centre shops. For a brasserie on the quay or a crêperie on the pedestrian street, a TikTok that follows a family from the museum exit to the table works better than a photo of a dish. A hotel can bet on a Reel of the view over the roadstead at dawn. According to Insee, the commune had 22 hotels and 819 rooms on 1 January 2026, and 1,372 trade, transport, accommodation and food service establishments in 2024.
From quai Alexandre III to place de Gaulle
The centre of Cherbourg can be filmed in a short loop: place de Gaulle and its theatre, place Centrale, the pedestrian streets, then quai Alexandre III and the bassin du Commerce. For 21 June 2026, the City had planned to open the Fête de la musique on this quay with a giant human conga line, aiming to beat the French record held by people from Lille (4,623 participants), before the concerts on the stages at place de Gaulle, place Centrale and the La Poste car park, according to its press release. A bar finds spontaneous images of its customers there. Outside events, the light changes quickly over the Channel: a grey sky in the morning, low sun on the breakwater in the afternoon. We always keep an indoor option in the schedule, and we take advantage of the sunny spells for the harbour, roadstead and boat shots that give a video shot here its identity.
Preparing a shoot at the end of the line
Cherbourg is the terminus of the line from Paris Saint-Lazare: the Esekai team travels with its equipment and arrives in the town centre, a few minutes' walk from the basin. Before leaving, we agree with you on a short, realistic shot list, the people to film, any access to an industrial or port site and a fallback in case of rain. On site, a typical day starts outdoors while the light is good, continues with interviews and product shots, and ends with service or atmosphere sequences. For an arsenal company, we adapt the framing to the site's rules, even if it means filming the portraits outside the zone. For a shop, we shoot UGC with Cotentin creators when possible, because an accent and familiar places make the ad more credible with local residents.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
