Here, comic-book heroes are displayed on building façades: the tourist office lists some thirty murals signed by Zep, Schuiten or Boucq. Angoulême had 41,908 residents in 2023 according to Insee and is home to an image industry cluster that claims more than 50 animation and video game studios. A city that makes images for the whole world deserves brand videos to match. We come from Paris with a light crew to shoot social ads, UGC content and TikToks here.
See our workThe Magelis cluster and its 2,000 image-industry jobs
Magelis, Angoulême's image cluster, reports more than 200 image-industry businesses, more than 50 animation and video game studios, 10 sound studios, 15 higher-education schools and more than 2,000 full-time-equivalent jobs. Insee confirms this profile in its own way: of the 4,613 economically active establishments in the town in 2024, 243 are in information and communication, or 5.3%. For a studio, the challenge is not knowing how to make images, it is telling its own story: recruiting animators, developers or sound engineers in a fiercely contested market takes videos that show the working atmosphere, the projects and the people. A one-minute team portrait, shot between the workstations and the screening room, works on LinkedIn as well as on Instagram. A school, for its part, can film its students in the workshop for its enrolment campaigns.
A prefecture that keeps the whole of Charente working
The town has 29,739 jobs in 2023 for 16,654 employed residents, according to Insee: every morning, a large share of employees arrive from the surrounding conurbation and département. The population, meanwhile, has fallen since 1968, when it reached 47,822, before stabilising: 41,740 in 2017, 41,908 in 2023. Those aged 15 to 24 make up 16.3% of residents in 2023, a high share that owes a lot to the image schools. For a town-centre brand, you therefore need to speak to two audiences: working people who come in on weekdays and students who live locally. Retail, transport, accommodation and catering account for 1,131 establishments in 2024. A café near the station or the place du Champ de Mars has every interest in Reels published just when students are choosing where to have lunch.
Murals, the plateau and Saint-Pierre cathedral
Since the 1980s, Angoulême has turned into an open-air gallery. The tourist office cites murals by Philippe Dupuy and Charles Berberian, François Boucq, François Schuiten and Zep, along with an obelisk in tribute to René Goscinny and a bust of Hergé; a map of the route is handed out free at the information desk. For a brand, these walls offer a colourful, unique and instantly recognisable backdrop, provided the authors' rights are respected in an advertising use: we use them in the background, without making them the subject. On the plateau, Saint-Pierre cathedral, a Romanesque masterpiece, and the ramparts overlooking the Charente valley provide the wide shots. A UGC creator who introduces a shop while walking up from the station to the old town tells the story of the city at the same time as the product.
Ramparts in September, French-language film in August
Born in 1939, the Circuit des Remparts has run for 51 editions and keeps an unchanged urban course of 1,279 metres; it is held every year on the third weekend of September and welcomes several hundred vintage vehicles, with a concours d'élégance on the Friday evening on the esplanade of the Champ de Mars. For a garage, a body shop or a lifestyle brand, it is a spectacular filming location. The Festival du film francophone takes place at the end of every summer, from 24 to 29 August in 2026, with its film crews, its guests and its audience on the terraces of the town centre. The tourist office also announces a new multi-day event devoted to comics for January 2027. Each time, a local business can prepare its videos in advance and publish during the event, when all eyes are on the city.
Our shoot day in Angoulême
The TGV puts Angoulême within reach of Paris in a day: the crew arrives in the morning at the station, at the foot of the plateau, with equipment that fits in bags. Beforehand, we have fixed the script, the order of the shots, the choice of Charente creators or students from the image schools, and the permits for public space. On site, we start with the exteriors while the light is low on the ramparts, spend the late morning at your premises for the product or the team, and devote the afternoon to testimonials and UGC takes in the streets of the centre. The footage leaves with us that same evening; in editing, each film is cut into short versions where only the first few seconds change, to see which one holds attention best once running.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
