Twice a day, the sea uncovers then covers the path to the Grand Bé: in Saint-Malo, a shooting schedule is built first of all with the tide tables. The commune had 47,439 inhabitants in 2023 according to Insee, but also 10,358 second homes and occasional dwellings the same year, proof of a city that changes face with the season. Our Paris-based videographers take the road to the Emerald Coast to film UGC, Reels, TikTok and Meta ads here, tailored to both audiences.
See our work47,439 inhabitants and 10,358 second homes
Insee's 2023 figures sketch a commune where seniors weigh heavily: 24.0% of residents are between 65 and 79 and 10.7% are 80 or over, while 15-24-year-olds make up only 9.8%. A brand speaking to year-round Malouins is therefore mostly addressing active retirees, easier to reach on Facebook and Instagram than on TikTok. The housing stock tells another story: 10,358 second homes or occasional dwellings in 2023, against 25,835 main residences. Part of the customer base therefore lives elsewhere and only stays here a few weeks a year. For a business, this justifies two series of content: local videos with faces known in the neighbourhood, and ads served in the owners' and holidaymakers' home regions, before they arrive rather than during their stay.
Fertiliser, ferries and offshore racing stables
The port of Saint-Malo describes itself as multipurpose: passengers, trade, fishing, ship repair, leisure boating, offshore racing and cruises. Three shipping companies run crossings from there to Portsmouth, Poole, Jersey and Guernsey. On the freight side, 1.3 million tonnes passed through in 2019, mostly fertiliser and animal feed, and the port cites the Roullier group and Cooperl among its historic players. At the Pôle Technique Duguay-Trouin, offshore racing teams work alongside marine maintenance companies. These trades film well and are hard to describe in writing: a yard looking for a laminator is better off showing a hull being sanded, an agricultural-supplies manufacturer showing a load being followed along the quay. In the commune, Insee records 6,387 economically active establishments in 2024, 312 of them in industry, all employers who benefit from recruitment videos shot on the job.
Hotels, fishmongers and tables of the corsair city
On 1 January 2026, Saint-Malo had 74 hotels with 2,531 rooms according to Insee, only one of them five-star, as well as 2 campsites. For a hotelier, the video that convinces shows the room at the moment the light comes in, then the real view from the window, unfiltered: this is exactly what the guest will check on arrival. Retail, transport, accommodation and catering together account for 1,631 active establishments in 2024, a quarter of the commune's total. Restaurants have an obvious subject in the local fishing: the port cites scallops, spider crab and whelks among its flagship species, and cuttlefish at Cancale. A Reel that follows the scallop from the stall to the plate, in close-ups and subtitled, holds attention far better than a wide shot of a still-empty dining room. A crêperie can also bet on UGC: a customer tasting and reacting to camera.
Route du Rhum, Étonnants Voyageurs and tide coefficients
For its 13th edition in 2026, the Route du Rhum, created in 1978, set up its village in Saint-Malo from 20 October to 1 November: the tourist office announced 118 boats and over a million visitors expected, with a start to follow from the pointe du Grouin, in Cancale. For a brand, these two weeks offer crowds, lively quays and skippers within reach of the camera, provided permits are requested very early. In spring, the Étonnants Voyageurs festival took over 12 venues across the city from 23 to 25 May 2026. The rest of the year, the tide sets the schedule: the tourist office points out that at spring tides the coefficients generally exceed 100, and that around the equinoxes the sea retreats particularly far. The ramparts, the Sillon beach and Fort National can then be filmed with foregrounds of sand and rocks that vanish at high tide.
How we organise a day between Intra-Muros and the port
The script is finalised on a video call a few days beforehand, and the date is chosen according to two constraints specific to the city: the time of low tide if a scene is to be shot on the foreshore, and the events calendar, which can saturate parking around the ramparts. We come with compact equipment, enough to go from a cobbled alley to a pontoon without a van or heavy set-up. A typical day starts outdoors while the light is still low, continues in a shop or kitchen at service time, then ends on the ramparts walkway or at the water's edge as the sun goes down. The rushes go back to the Paris studio for editing: since its creation by Tony Lo, Esekai has supported more than 350 brands, and a day in Saint-Malo usually turns into a series of hooks and formats ready to be compared in a campaign.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
