Three months of carnival, a clet'che kept for life and bandes parading under "forests of umbrellas": in Dunkirk, the festival has its own codes, and locals are already filming it. The city has 86,263 inhabitants in 2023 according to Insee, and it also lives to the rhythm of a leading port and an industry in the midst of change. We come from Paris to shoot UGC videos, Reels and TikTok ads that speak the language of the North.
See our workGigafactories and the battery valley
The development agency Dunkerque l'Énergie Créative presents the area as a battery valley: among the gigafactory projects for electric vehicles launched in the Hauts-de-France, two concern Dunkirk. Verkor, founded in 2020, has chosen to set up there; Aluminium Dunkerque announces 60,000 tonnes of alloy ingots for the car industry from 2025; and the Neomat platform, with which Orano is associated, represents an investment of nearly €500 million for commissioning planned at the end of 2028. These manufacturers are recruiting operators, maintenance technicians and engineers, often in a region where competition between employers is fierce. Employer-brand video then becomes a recruitment tool in its own right: an operator showing visitors round their line, a work-study student talking about their training, published on TikTok and Instagram where the candidates are.
An employment hub for the whole urban area
Insee counts 45,288 jobs in Dunkirk in 2023 for 31,557 employed residents: the city provides work for a good part of the urban area. Its population, on the other hand, has fallen since the peak of 100,404 inhabitants in 1982. Nearly one active establishment in three in 2024 (1,782 out of 5,913, or 30.1%) sells, transports, accommodates or serves food, reflecting a port and logistics economy. The 2025 amenities database also records 62 bakery-patisseries and 153 hairdressing salons in the commune. For a town-centre shop, the customer base therefore also includes employees who come to work during the week, to be reached with formats published at lunchtime. With 22.8% of residents aged 65 or over in 2023, a Facebook version often has its place alongside the TikTok edit.
Saturday balls and Mardi gras bandes
According to the tourist office, the Dunkirk carnival stretches over three months, with a climax in Mardi gras week: balls on Saturday evening, bandes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The clet'che, the carnival-goer's outfit, is an identity that most masquelours never change. For a local brand, this calendar dictates winter communication: a bar, a fancy-dress shop or a make-up brand can publish preparation tutorials in the weeks beforehand, then film the atmosphere on the big day as UGC with the participants' agreement. Tone matters as much as image: a creator who knows the traditions will be credible where an outside actor would sound false. Carnival videos are shared enormously among people from Dunkirk, which gives rare organic reach.
Malo seafront, port and belfry
The tourist office describes Dunkirk as the third-largest port in France and highlights its six beaches, the seaside villas of the digue de Malo-les-Bains, the belfries, Vauban's fortifications and the statue of the privateer Jean Bart, to whom the people of Dunkirk have also written an anthem. On the cultural side, the LAAC, the FRAC Grand Large and the musée Dunkerque 1940 devoted to Operation Dynamo complete the route. For a shoot, the seafront offers a clear horizon, changing light and a wind that gives movement to shots: a strong setting for a clothing, outdoor or wellness brand, provided you take care over sound recording. Young windsurfers at Malo, the Vélomaritime cycle route that runs along the coast or the port's cranes provide images that immediately place the video in the North.
A TikTok agency in Dunkirk for a day
Dunkirk is reached by train from Paris, with or without a change depending on the timetable, and the station is close to the centre. Script, sequencing and recruitment of northern creators are settled before the trip, as are permits for public space or access requests for an industrial site, which often take several weeks. On a listed or port site, we follow the operator's safety instructions: protective equipment, authorised zones, escort. A typical day can start on the seafront at sunrise, continue in your factory or shop for testimonials, then end in the town centre for the UGC sequences. In post-production, each usable take gives rise to several cuts, vertical for TikTok and Reels as well as square for the Facebook feed.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
