A town hall topped by a 65-metre belfry, a national theatre housed in a former palais du travail: the Gratte-Ciel district gives Villeurbanne a skyline impossible to mistake for Lyon's. The commune, next to Lyon but independent of it, had 163,684 inhabitants in Insee's 2023 census. Created in Paris by Tony Lo, Esekai crosses France to make social ads, UGC testimonials and TikTok formats here, populated with faces and streets familiar to the people of Villeurbanne.
See our workA commune of 163,684 inhabitants, not a Lyon arrondissement
It is often forgotten from Paris: Villeurbanne is a full commune in its own right, a member of the Métropole de Lyon, with its own town hall and its own centre. Insee counts 163,684 inhabitants and 82,498 households there in 2023, on a territory so tight that the density reaches 11,273 inhabitants per square kilometre. For communication, there are two consequences. The first concerns targeting: a TikTok or Meta ad set to Villeurbanne reaches a population distinct from that of the Presqu'île, and the message benefits from saying so, with street and station names the audience knows. The second concerns density: many journeys are made on foot or by public transport, and a UGC video shot on a busy pavement, phone in hand, looks exactly like what viewers see when they step out of their front door.
From the La Doua labs to the offices of the former Bally factory
Here, the typical company is small: of the 4,602 employer establishments counted by Insee at the end of 2024, 65.8% have between one and nine employees, and 70.9% work in retail, transport or services. The commune recorded 69,137 jobs in 2023. To the north, the La Doua campus has housed INSA Lyon since 12 November 1957, according to the City: schools, laboratories and young research-based companies look there for engineers and customers. For them, we shoot portraits of researchers in lab coats, a process explained in fifty seconds for a LinkedIn feed and testimonials from interns for recruitment fairs. Another telling setting: the Bally shoe factory, established in 1910 and converted into offices in 2008. An SME based there can tell its story within those walls, to camera, without a studio.
Cours Émile-Zola and the new Gratte-Ciel centre
Villeurbanne's retail scene can be read along cours Émile-Zola and around the Gratte-Ciel, where the town centre is expanding. Lot A of the ZAC Gratte-Ciel centre-ville, whose foundation stone was laid in October 2026, includes 207 homes and 3,874 m² of retail space, due for delivery in the first quarter of 2028 according to the municipal magazine. The brands that will open there will need to make themselves known even before the building site is finished. For a neighbourhood shop, the recipe comes down to very little: the manager behind the counter, three shots of the product, an opening offer and the address said out loud. On the restaurant side, it is the 12:30 rush, a dining room full of workers and students, that supplies the material for one Reel, two TikToks and an ad version. The cinema Le Zola, bought by the City in 1980, is a reminder that the cours also has an evening life.
TNP, Astroballe and Invites: where and when to film
The Théâtre national populaire arrived from Chaillot after the announcement of 29 March 1972 and reopened on 11 November 2011, renovated and extended after three years of works, with a 673-seat auditorium. Its façade and place Lazare-Goujon offer a graphic backdrop for a festival, a school or a publisher. On the sports side, the Astroballe has hosted Asvel since 1995 with 5,600 seats: on a match night, the atmosphere in the stands is worth any set for any brand that speaks to supporters. Le Rize, opened in 2008, and the Institut d'art contemporain complete the list. As for dates, in 2022 the City was the first French Capital of Culture, with a project aimed at young people, and the free Invites festival brought together more than a hundred artists from 19 to 21 June 2026. It returns every two years, with the next edition in 2028.
From Gratte-Ciel metro to the campus by tram
The journey begins on rue du Colisée, in Paris, and ends at Lyon Part-Dieu station, a few stops from Villeurbanne. Metro line A serves the Gratte-Ciel station and the tram goes to the La Doua campus: no van needed, the equipment fits in two suitcases. Beforehand, everything is sorted remotely: the script is approved on a video call, the addresses scouted, and the UGC creators chosen from local residents or students. Filming in front of the town hall requires a permit, requested early. On the day, we open with the client's shop as the shutters go up, move on to the lunchtime service at a restaurant on cours Émile-Zola, spend the afternoon in offices or at a La Doua lab, and finish with a few street shots at the foot of the Gratte-Ciel, as the light drops.
Why creative ads deliver better results
An ad that looks like an ad gets skipped in a second. A creative ad works on the hook, the message and the format so it is watched to the end, then tested and adapted for as long as it converts.
