VSL (Sales Video): Definition, 7 Blocks and 2026 Pricing

VSL stands for video sales letter. Definition, the 7 blocks of the structure, the 3 duration regimes, vertical adaptation and what a quote really costs in 2026.

A VSL (Video Sales Letter, or sales video) is a fully scripted video whose sole purpose is to trigger a purchase or a booked call. It translates the written sales letter into video by following a fixed sequence: hook, problem, agitation, solution, proof, offer, call to action. Its length ranges from 30 seconds in vertical format to more than 20 minutes on a sales page: it is the structure, not the length, that defines a VSL. The rest, studio set, voice-over, motion design, UGC creator, is a matter of staging, not definition. The format benefits from a market driven by moving images: according to the SRI 2025 Digital Advertising Observatory (L'Observatoire de l'e-pub SRI 2025), produced by Oliver Wyman, video now accounts for nearly a third of digital advertising revenue in France.

What exactly does VSL mean, and why is the acronym confusing in France?

VSL is the English acronym for “video sales letter”, translated into French as “vidéo de vente” or “lettre de vente vidéo”. The format descends directly from print direct marketing: the long sales letters of the American copywriters of the 1970s and 1980s, those of Gary Halbert or Eugene Schwartz, which ran a proven argumentation mechanic over eight pages. When broadband made video usable on a web page, those same mechanics were filmed. The script did not change. The medium did.

French buyers almost never use the acronym on its own. In the briefs we receive, the format comes under six different names: vidéo de vente, vidéo tunnel de vente, vidéo page de vente, lettre de vente vidéo, “vidéo qui convertit”, and the hybrid spelling “vidéo sales letter”, which appears verbatim on several agency and trainer websites. All of these expressions refer to the same thing.

That leaves the problem of the acronym.

In France, VSL first means véhicule sanitaire léger, the seated patient transport reimbursed by the national health insurance (Assurance maladie). This is not a linguistic curiosity, it is a balance of power on search engines: according to SanteMobile, in January 2026, the fare for a medical VSL ranges from €0.93 to €1.10 per kilometre with a starting charge of €13.55 to €16.80; according to Medere, in September 2025, VSL driver training costs between €700 and €1,600. Those pages are massive, old and heavily linked. They crush the marketing meaning of the acronym in the French-language index.

Not to be confused with the medical-transport VSL: in France, the acronym VSL also stands for “véhicule sanitaire léger”, a patient transport service reimbursed by the Assurance maladie. The two have nothing to do with each other.

Type the query in French today and Google returns Wikipedia on the video signal, a video game school, a CNFPT training catalogue and a Cerfa tax form. The engine simply ignores the “VSL” token and treats the query as “vidéo définition”. The practical consequence for you: if you look for a provider by typing “agence VSL”, you will land on ambulance companies. Add “vidéo de vente” or “page de vente” to the query, and relevance returns immediately.

What is the structure of a VSL that converts, block by block?

A VSL is made up of seven blocks in a fixed order: hook, problem, agitation, solution, proof, offer, call to action. Each block has a precise job to do, and a measurable failure signal when it does not do it. Removing a block is possible; the order is not negotiable. A video that announces its offer before it has established the problem gets abandoned before the proof, which is the most consistent thing we see when reading retention curves.

2. ProblemMake them say “that's me”30–90 s3–6 sMassive drop-off between 3 and 8 s
3. AgitationPut a figure on the cost of inaction45–120 s0–4 s (often removed)Hostile comments, ad-hide rate
4. SolutionShow the mechanism, not the product60–240 s8–15 sRetention plateau that collapses mid-video

6. OfferMake the decision easy to take45–180 s4–8 sAdd-to-carts without payment
7. CTAState a single action, out loud15–45 s2–4 sDecent CTR, weak post-click conversion

Block 1 follows exactly the same measurement rules as a classic advertising hook: it is judged on 3-second retention, not on the opinion of the management committee. Hook typologies, their cost and their measurement are covered elsewhere on this blog, the hook block follows the same measurement rules as an advertising hook and there is no reason to invent a special metric just because the video is called a VSL.

Block 3, agitation, is the most misunderstood in the French market. Its role is not to frighten, it is to put a figure on what the status quo costs: how many orders lost per month, how many hours of customer service, how many product returns. Quantified, it works. Dramatised, it drives people away, and on social platforms it triggers ad hides that degrade delivery. We stopped writing emotional agitations for e-commerce accounts in 2024 for precisely that reason.

Block 5 requires a named proof carrier: an identifiable customer, a data capture, a third-party test. A “our customers love us” does not hold up for a second. The six families of proof usable in video are detailed in our dedicated article, the proof block is handled with an identified proof carrier and it is often the item that costs the most to produce honestly.

One last thing on structure: the VSL is not the only sequence that converts. It is the most direct, the one that owns its commercial intent most openly. Other narrative architectures work better on very broad cold traffic, and other narrative structures convert over short durations without ever going through agitation.

A VSL is shot script in hand: the teleprompter is not a luxury, it is what guarantees that the seven blocks come in the right order.

How long should a VSL be in 2026: 45 seconds or 20 minutes?

The length of a VSL is deduced from traffic temperature and basket price, never from the format or a trend. According to Sendspark, effective sales videos run under 90 seconds for cold prospecting and between 2 and 5 minutes for a product demonstration. The gap is a factor of three. Saying “a VSL lasts 10 to 30 minutes”, as you still read on several French infopreneur sites, amounts to confusing a format with one of its applications.

We think in terms of three regimes.

CriterionFeed VSL (30–60 s)Sales page VSL (3–8 min)Premium offer VSL (10–25 min)
Traffic temperatureCold, paidWarm (ad click, email)Hot (webinar, long retargeting)

Number of assets to produce6 to 12 variants1 master + 3 hooks1 master + 2 short versions
Failure signal to watch3-second retention50% view rateRate of reaching the offer block

On our vertical e-commerce campaigns, a 30 to 60 second feed VSL that falls below 35% retention at 3 seconds never recovers: we cut it after 72 hours rather than optimise the edit. Long versions are judged differently, on the rate of reaching the offer block. A prospect who reaches minute 14 of an 18-minute VSL has already bought in their head; if they don't get there, the problem is in the solution, not in the CTA. These figures are our internal averages, not published benchmarks: treat them as orders of magnitude to recalibrate on your account.

What is the difference between a VSL, a promotional video, a UGC ad and brand content?

The VSL is the only one of these four formats where the script is written and approved before the shoot and where a single call to action is allowed from start to finish. A promotional video presents a product, an offer or an event with no imposed argumentative structure: it informs and appeals, it does not dismantle objection after objection. A UGC ad relies on the credibility of the creator speaking, and its script is deliberately loose to preserve the tone. Brand content sells a vision, not a product reference, and its main KPI is not conversion.

The “lifespan” row deserves a warning: a feed VSL wears out like any paid creative, and the wear-out thresholds are covered in our article on video ad fatigue and its false diagnoses. A VSL placed on a sales page, on the other hand, can run for eighteen months without changes because its audience renews entirely.

The quickest test to know whether what you have in hand is a VSL: remove the final CTA. If the video still makes sense, it is not a VSL. If it becomes absurd, it is one.

What are the different types of sales videos, and which one for which funnel?

Five families of VSL cover 95% of needs: talking head, animated slides, split screen, testimonial-driven and UGC hybrid. The choice comes down to just two variables: who can credibly carry the message, and how much time you have before going live.

Talking head VSL

The founder or an expert facing the camera, teleprompter, neutral set. Short lead time, a half-day shoot, and a reshoot is possible to test another angle. It is the default format when the brand rests on an identifiable person. It falls flat when the spokesperson has no visible authority on the subject, and you can tell within three seconds.

Slides and motion design VSL

Voice-over on animated visuals, no face. According to CKC-Net, in October 2025, an animated or semi-animated VSL costs between €1,500 and €4,000 in France. The real advantage is not the price, it is editability: changing a figure, a promise or a price on an animated VSL takes two hours of post-production versus a new shoot. For offers that change every quarter, that changes the economics of the format.

Split-screen VSL

Interface capture plus the presenter overlaid. Standard format in SaaS and B2B, because the proof there is the product itself at work. Durations are often long, 8 to 20 minutes, on already qualified traffic.

Testimonial-driven VSL

The proof block takes the place of the solution block: three customers tell their before/after story, the narrator merely links them. It works remarkably well on service offers where the result is hard to film. The cost lies in logistics, not in the camera: getting three customers who are available, aligned and cleared to speak takes weeks.

UGC hybrid VSL

A creator runs through the VSL structure in the codes of the feed: shot on a phone, direct tone, social editing rhythm. This is the format that has dominated our e-commerce productions since 2024, because it combines the argumentative discipline of the VSL with the audience tolerance of native content. A creator paid to promote a product to their audience is doing commercial influence: the law of 9 June 2023, detailed by Centre Inffo, requires them to display the mention “Publicité” or “Collaboration commerciale” clearly, legibly and identifiably on the video.

Two terms keep coming up in related searches and do not belong on this list. VOD refers to an on-demand mode of distribution, vlog to an editorial genre of filmed diary. Neither is a sales video; a vlog may contain a commercial sequence, but that does not make it a VSL.

Editing station with two timelines of 9:16 vertical videos compared side by side
Modularising a VSL: each block becomes a vertical asset that can be tested separately, not a random cut from the master.

How do you adapt a VSL to vertical format without butchering it?

A VSL is not shortened to go vertical, it is modulated: the seven blocks become three to five standalone 9:16 assets, testable separately. Cutting a six-minute master down to forty-five seconds gives an argumentative mush where the CTA arrives without proof. What we do instead: we identify which blocks can live on their own, turn them into complete videos with their own hook and their own payoff, and let the algorithm decide which one deserves budget. Budgets are already moving that way: according to The Media Leader, which details the SRI Digital Advertising Observatory in February 2026, video grew by 22% on social networks in 2025, against 8% for classic formats, and accounts for nearly 60% of social revenue in France.

The blocks are not equal when it comes to this split.

  • The problem block survives very well on its own: “you pay €60 per order for a €45 basket, here's why” makes a whole video.
  • The proof block survives on its own, provided it contains a name, a figure and a date.
  • The solution block survives on its own as a 15 to 20 second product demonstration.
  • The agitation block never survives on its own. Isolated, it only produces anxiety with no way out, and the hide rate climbs. We always keep it glued to the solution block.
  • The offer block alone only works in retargeting, on an audience that has already seen the other assets.

Muted sound changes the whole writing approach. A vertical VSL must remain understandable when watched silently, which requires built-in subtitles and a promise written on screen in the first two seconds. According to SellersCommerce, in its compilation of video statistics published in November 2025, subtitled TikTok ads show +95% brand affinity, +58% ad recall and +25% perceived originality compared with versions without subtitles. A VSL script written for the ear and carried over to vertical as it stands loses half of its argument.

That leaves the question of ratio, which we settle by placement and not by principle: the ratio is chosen by placement, not by habit. A 4:5 on an Instagram feed does not hold the same screen area as a full-frame 9:16 on TikTok, and the subtitle safe zone changes with it.

A remark that works against our own offer: not every offer gains from going vertical. A B2B software at €1,200 a month sold to IT directors has no interest in seeing its VSL chopped into five TikTok assets. The vertical format serves volume acquisition on accessible baskets and quick decisions. Above a certain level of contractual commitment, the long VSL on a sales page, backed by a human demo, remains the most effective mechanic, and the cheapest to iterate.

How much does a VSL cost in 2026, and what do you actually buy in a quote?

A VSL quote differs from a classic video quote by three lines that generalist agencies forget: script copywriting, voice-over, and hook variants. The rest, shoot, editing, colour grading, usage rights, follows the usual marketing video production rate cards, already detailed elsewhere on this blog.

Copywriting is the most underrated line item in the French market. Writing a five-minute VSL that holds together takes a scoping interview, extraction of real objections from customer service, a structure in seven blocks and two to three rewrite passes read aloud. Allow one to three working days depending on the complexity of the offer. Providers who charge €250 for the script write it in forty minutes from your product page, and you can tell at the first viewing.

Voice-over, for its part, is billed on usage rights and duration: a professional actor on an eight-minute VSL with unlimited web distribution has nothing in common with a twenty-second spot.

The third line item is the one that decides whether the operation succeeds. Ordering “a VSL” makes no sense in paid acquisition: you are buying a single hypothesis, with no way of knowing whether it is the hook, the offer or the spokesperson that caps performance. The real purchase unit is one VSL plus N hook variants, produced in the same shoot session. Conversion optimisation practitioners often aim for a 20 to 30% cumulative gain over a year of testing, which assumes running several variants. We develop this logic in the article on the purchase unit that is not the video but the iteration.

A word on the figures in circulation. Several French sites claim that a page with a VSL converts at 12.7% against 4.8% for a text page, citing an Unbounce report. We could not find that figure in the source report, so we do not publish it. Others promise “10 to 15% conversion with your VSL” without stating the traffic, the basket or the measurement method: a conversion rate without traffic context means strictly nothing. The solid figures available are more modest and more useful: according to Wyzowl, in its 2026 report, 82% of marketers say video generates a positive return on investment and 82% see an increase in time spent on their landing pages.

What you are really buying in a VSL quote is a formalised, filmed sales hypothesis. If the underlying offer is weak, poorly positioned price, no guarantee, no proof, no production will save it. We turn down about one request in five for this reason, and it is always the most unpleasant conversation of the sales cycle: explaining to someone that their problem is not the video.

So the right question to ask before ordering is not “how much does a VSL cost”, but: what do I already know about what makes my customers buy, and can I prove it on screen in under a minute? If the answer fits in two clear sentences, the shoot will be simple. If not, start with ten customer calls before calling a studio.

Frequently asked questions

What does VOD mean?
VOD stands for “video on demand”: a mode of distribution where the viewer chooses when to watch, as opposed to a programming schedule. VOD refers to a distribution channel, not a content genre. A VSL hosted on a sales page is not VOD in the platform sense, even if it plays on demand.
What does vlog mean?
A vlog is a video blog: an editorial format in which a person documents their daily life, their profession or a project, continuously and in the first person. Its goal is affinity and audience regularity, not immediate conversion. A vlog may contain a promotional sequence, but its structure follows no imposed argumentative sequence, unlike a VSL.
Does a VSL work in B2B?
Yes, mainly as a split-screen VSL of 8 to 20 minutes, delivered after a form or in an email sequence. In B2B, the sales video does not replace the salesperson: it qualifies and pre-sells, so that the first meeting starts at the negotiation stage rather than the discovery stage. The gain is measured in cycle length, not in a direct conversion rate.
Do you need to show your face in a VSL?
No. A motion design VSL with voice-over works very well when the offer rests on a mechanism rather than on a person, and it costs between €1,500 and €4,000 in France according to CKC-Net in October 2025. The face becomes useful when the spokesperson's authority is part of the argument: coach, practitioner, founder recognised in their sector.
Does a VSL qualify for the audiovisual tax credit (2079-VIDEO-SD)?
No, in the vast majority of cases. The tax credit claimed through this form targets the production of approved audiovisual works, not commercial communication films. A sales video falls under marketing expenses, deductible as operating costs. Have the exact accounting treatment validated by your accountant before making any filing.
How long before you know whether a VSL works?
On paid traffic, a feed VSL gives a usable signal within 72 hours provided you have reached several hundred impressions per variant. On a sales page, allow a minimum of 200 to 300 qualified visitors before concluding anything. Below those volumes, you are reading statistical noise and you risk cutting a version that works.
